Chadderton Goods

When the Chadderton Goods coal and mineral yard became a Coal Concentration Depot the number of sidings was reduced from six to two and coal handling equipment introduced. This is the unloading pit and conveyor, just beyond the Hunt Lane bridge by the rail entrance, looking towards the buffers in January 1986. There was a resident industrial diesel shunter. Plenty of coal can be seen in the various piles on the left side of the picture but rail traffic would cease with closure of the depot in 1988. The yard is now a housing estate.
