Shawclough and Healey

Looking towards Bacup, through the 43yd Whitworth Road Tunnel, on 27th December 2024. The brickwork of the eastern portal is completely different to that on the west side. Rochdale to Bacup passenger services were always less important than goods traffic - stone, coal, cotton and more specialised loads and from this tunnel portal a long siding branched off to Fieldhouse Carpet Mill. Passenger trains ceased in 1947, a temporary closure that was made permanent in 1949, but freight to Whitworth continued until 1967, generally needing two goods trains per day and sometimes more to clear the traffic from various yards.
