The entrance to the DLR station at Shadwell is built into one of the arches of the historic 1840 London & Blackwall Railway viaduct, with steps and a lift up to the island platform, seen at 09.16 on Saturday, 4th January 2025. It opened on 31st August 1987 with the first two stages of the system from Island Gardens to Stratford and Tower Gateway. A station on the Blackwall line, slightly to the east, called Shadwell & St. George's East, closed as a WWII economy in 1941 but never re-opened. Its derelict entrance survives on the south side of the viaduct just to the east of the DLR station. (See my photo, image no. 73355.)
