Wanstead

Wanstead, LU Central Line, looking east on 14th January 2025. The Central Line's eastern extensions, delayed by the war, took over the ex-LNER Epping line and Hainault Loop. This section and station, in tunnel from Leytonstone to Newbury Park, was opened on 14th December 1947. The tunnel was almost ready by 1939 but temporarily converted into a three miles long underground factory manufacturing aircraft components by the Plessey Company. It included a narrow gauge railway but all finished in 1945 with the tunnel opening for tube trains two years later.
