Brinnington Tunnel

The west portal of the restored Brinnington Tunnel, now part of the Midshires cycle route, on 15th January 2025. After through trains to Cheadle Junction ceased in 1980, stone trains to Stockport Portwood continued to pass through but in 1986 the stone terminal was moved eastwards to Bredbury (where it continues to receive rail traffic) and the line between Stockport and there was lifted to allow the M60 Motorway to be built. Conversion to a cycle route and reopening of the tunnel occurred in 1990.
