Britannia

The road from Bacup to Rochdale drops sharply down from Britannia towards Shawforth. The railway ran alongside the road to just outside Shawforth, on a gradient of 1:40. This view, from just below Britannia Summit, shows the steeply graded trackbed on the stone built shelf, which saw its last passenger and freight trains in 1947, although occasional light engine movements continued for a few more years.
