Ormskirk, looking north from the buffer stop that separates this long single platform, at 17.16 on Tuesday, 29th April 2025. This has been the case since through services between Liverpool and Preston via this route were withdrawn by BR on 3rd May 1970. The whole line had been listed for closure in the 1963 Beeching Report and although saved, economies saw it split with the northern part of the platform used by diesel services to Preston, while electric services to Liverpool (now Merseyrail Northern Line) serve the southern section that previously used a south-facing bay platform. (A similar layout existed at Kirkby station until 5th October 2023 when Merseyrail services were extended to a brand new station at Headbolt Lane, which then became the interchange for Northern services to Manchester Victoria.)
