Stirling North Junction: View from the three-hour Glasgow-Aberdeen express, leaving Stirling behind A3 60100 'Spearmint' on 13th July 1963. A surprise was in store at Perth where, for reasons unknown, the A3 was taken off the train and replaced by one of Perth's trusty Black Fives. Having left Perth eight minutes late, 44959 proved more than capable of keeping to Pacific timings reaching Aberdeen only four minutes down.

Newchurch Halt: Culcheth Linear Park runs along the old GCR Wigan Central branch from the point where it crossed the L&MR near Kenyon Junction, down through Culcheth and on towards Newchurch Halt. The trackbed right of way runs out however just by this bridge, which carries the A574 over the old railway. Newchurch Halt, which opened as late as 1943, was just a little further on. It closed with the line in November 1964.

Cardross: Hello stranger! 73968 and 73969, drawing ten carriages, come south on a Fort William to Polmadie working passing Cardross. Sleeper services to Fort William have been suspended for some time due to COVID-19. This train is considerably longer than the usual single headed Fort William portion.

Glenesk Junction: A Waverley - Tweedbank DMU about to run south past the site of Glenesk Colliery (on the left) in the summer of 2019. The train is approximately midway between the Shawfair and Eskbank stops, having recently crossed over Glenesk Viaduct, visible in the background.

Wanton Walls Junction [2nd]: The connection between the Monktonhall to Niddrie West line and the new Millerhill 'S' was called Wanton Walls Junction, the name pinched (why?) from the original Wanton Walls a mile to the west. The later incarnation was lifted with the older line in 1984, but this sign was still there 11 years on. Thanks to Ewan Crawford for help with this one.

Parkside [1st]: 323236 at Parkside with a Manchester Airport to Lime Street service on 8th February 2020. The train is actually passing through the site of the first Parkside station, which was only open from 1830 to 1839 when a replacement opened just beyond the junction to the rear of the train. Parkside [1st] was of course the spot where William Huskisson was fatally injured by 'Rocket' on the opening day of the L&M and his memorial can be seen in the right foreground. It has been pretty inaccessible for the 170 plus years since the station closed.

Calais Maritime: In the days before cheap flights or Channel tunnels, the traveller to the Continent could look forward to the wonderful sight of a Chapelon '231E' Pacific awaiting the arrival of the cross-channel ferry at Calais. 231E5 is seen here at Calais Maritime at the head of the heavy 8pm overnight express to Basle on 2nd July 1964.
