South Esk Viaduct: New plaques on the South Esk Viaduct.
Stirling: Here is NHRA chair Theo Steel with representatives of Network Rail and Story Contracting at this morning's presentation of two separate plaques for the 2020 awards for the footbridge and canopy.
Eastfield Shed: GNSR no. 49 'Gordon Highlander', inside the shed at Eastfield on 27th August 1965, with NBR no. 256 'Glen Douglas' outside. The 'Glen' was being made ready for a railtour the following day but, as far as I can recall, 'Gordon Highlander' was not scheduled for any work that weekend.
Crow Nest Junction: Just to the east of Crow Nest Junction, on the line to Westhoughton and Lostock Junction, this bridge has been substantially rebuilt with a prefabricated steel deck replacing the original structure. There is still a strict weight limit but the bridge only provides access to nearby stables and a public footpath. 156424 passes underneath heading from Southport to Manchester Oxford Road on 27th April 2021.
Figgate Burn Bridge [E&DR]: The bridge that carried the original Edinburgh and Dalkeith route between Leith and Niddrie West over the Figgate Burn, seen here in September 2016. View is west across the A199, with Baileyfield S&C Works to the right and the ECML off to the left. The route south from here was closed in 1859 by which time a direct link north from the ECML had been installed by the NB (see image [[75167]]).
Oxenholme Lake District: The Daventry to Mossend Tesco Express passes Oxenholme on 29 May 2021 with DRS 88001 providing the traction.
Darnick Siding: Sculpture in Darnick Community Woodland near Melrose. It commemorates a train crash on 10 July 1921 and incorporates a buffer head found during tree planting in 1998.
Meadowhead Paper Mill: Around 2100hrs on 16th June 2021, and with a late burst of fading sunlight, a glimpse over the fence of Colas 70813 as it shunts the exchange sidings at the Caledonian Paper Mill at Irvine. The loco dropped off the loaded tanks from Aberdeen Waterloo and later left for Workington with the empties.
Townhill Wagon Shops: The site of Townhill Wagon Shops and sidings in a view looking east in 2005.
Walton-on-the-Naze: The replacement ticket office at Walton-on-the-Naze, the Essex seaside terminus of the branch from Thorpe-le-Soken, seen here on the evening of 1st June 2021. On a previous visit, in September 2020, this was shut and the only staff were the driver and guard of the hourly train service and so it was on this latest visit too. Also, again on both occasions, nobody checked our tickets in either direction for the entire journey to and from Liverpool Street, must be down to covid, even though we were uncomfortably masked throughout the journeys.
Clapham Junction: An unidentified Class 50, in Network South East livery, approaches Clapham Junction in 1989 with a passenger service from Exeter to Waterloo.
Silverstripe Saw Mill: The 1923 Edition of the 25 OS map shows a more restricted tramway system than the 1901 map. Aerial photos taken in 1933 and 1948 show that the tramway consisted of narrow gauge tracks with small trolley-like flat wagons. These were probably hand-propelled down to the loading bank level and around the site between the stacks of cut timber. By 1948 the site had been re-arranged so that the tramway no longer reached the siding and the operators needed to use some other means of transport to get the wood to the railway wagons. Aberdeen: Class J38 65901 at Aberdeen station's north end in 1960.
