Workington: Vintage poster displayed in the northbound waiting room at Workington in October 2024.
Ewood Bridge and Edenfield: Visiting 9F 2-10-0 92134 passing Ewood Bridge with the 12:15 Heywood - Rawtenstall.
Accrington: On the last day of 6M43/6E43, Preston Dock bitumen trains, it had to go wrong! The loaded train for Preston slipped to a standstill in Kitson Wood tunnel, on the climb to Copy Pit, leading to a delay of 212 minutes and much disruption to passenger services. The returning empties are seen at Accrington station hauled by 56105. There was some debate as to whether or not there would be a headboard, in the event no headboard and no fuss as 6E43, Preston to Haverton Hill passes by with no return in the foreseeable future.
Langwathby: 34092 'City of Wells' at the head of the Cumbrian Mountain Express accelerating through Langwathby in October 1988. 'City of Wells' was built at Brighton works for the Southern Railway in 1949 and preserved in 1971, initially on the Worth Valley Railway but more recently purchased by the East Lancashire Railway.
Birmingham New Street: 50001 'Dreadnought' stands at Birmingham New Street, ready for its next working on 1st March 1984. It was eventually withdrawn in 1991 but was not scrapped until 2002, by Booth-Roe at Rotherham.
Sale [Tram]: Metrolink 3015 calls at Sale on the way from Altrincham to Bury, on 2nd October 2024. Like many Altrincham line tram stops, Sale retains most of its infrastructure from main line days. The catenary hangs from original gantries, erected in 1931 for the 1500vDC MSJAR electrification. In 1971 the line was converted to 25kvAC allowing AM4 EMUs to run through from Crewe. After a further twenty years the third iteration arrived in the form of Metrolink tram operation, which uses a 750vDC supply, but still suspended from the gantries that are now approaching their centenary.
Highams Park: Highams Park level crossing and defunct signal box, on the Chingford branch, seen from upstairs windows of bus on route 212 about to turn right onto Winchester Road, at 14.48 on a miserably wet Monday, 28th October 2024. The line here was opened by the GER in 1873 and Highams Park station is out of view further north to the left. This is a very pleasant residential part of east London with a real sense of community about it, centred around the station. The line became part of London Overground in 2015.
Strowan Tunnel: View looking east to Crieff showing the River Earn west of the former Trowan Lodge. The lighter coloured trees in the forest to the left of the river follow the route of the former railway.
Bishopton: 'Blue train' EMU 107 is the front unit on a six-coach eastbound service at Bishopton. The picture is thought to date from 1968.
