Middleton: Looking from Towneley Street, Middleton, into the old L&YR goods yard and towards the station throat, in December 2024. The factory sits in line with the layout of the old station, and it was easy to imagine railway trucks in this loading bay, but the tracks were long gone when this building was constructed on the station site.
Clifton and Lowther: Clifton Bridge carries the WCML over the M6, and Network Rail have recently announced plans to completely replace the bridge in January 2026. The work will see the WCML closed for two weeks whilst the current bridge is taken away by road and a new one built on site. The M6 will close for two weekends, whilst this takes place.
Wolverhampton: The signal box at the Birmingham end of Wolverhampton station, still unchanged from my visits in the 1980s
Newchurch No 1 Tunnels: At the Waterfoot end of The Glen are these two tunnel portals. On the left is Newchurch No.1 Tunnel and on the right Thrutch Tunnel. On my last visit in 2009 (See [[23833]]) these tunnels were both bricked up and inaccessible but in 2019 Newchurch Tunnels 1 and 2 were opened up and incorporated into a cycle route, accessed by this new bridge over the river. This view, looking towards Bacup, taken on 27th December 2024
Edinburgh Waverley: Class 20 8126 and brake van at Waverley's east end in 1973.
Clayhills Yard: All trains cancelled due to storm Eowyn on 24th January 2025. LNER and Scotrail trains lined up in Clayhills Yard
Farringdon: Thameslink trains from south of the river to the Great Northern line were only going as far as Finsbury Park on Saturday, 30th November 2024. This is 700124 departing from Farringdon at 14.40. I just missed this train but only had to wait 15 minutes for the next one.
Edinburgh Waverley: A very wet 5th June 1965 at Waverley as 60052 'Prince Palatine' awaits departure with the 'A3 Farewell' railtour, which I would have loved to have gone on. The tour was routed ECML to Newcastle, over to Carlisle then back via the Waverley Route, although sadly for the participants the A3 was taken off at Carlisle with a hot axlebox bearing and 60027 'Merlin' took over. It wasn`t the final farewell for 60052 though as she lasted another six months before being stopped with leaking pipes on 8th December 1965 and finally condemned on 17th January 1966.
Crieff [1st]: Crieff Medical Centre was built on the site of Crieff's goods yard, which had been the site of the original Crieff station. This is the view from King Street looking east. The original trainshed was closer to the camera than the present building.
Colchester: 31306 and 31308 on shed at Colchester depot in December 1989. In those days there were often locos stabled here for use on weekend engineering work. Colchester had a reasonable sized yard in those days and now it is used to stable EMUs.
