Auchmuty Paper Mill: Looking west at the Tullis Russell paper mill in 1994. An extension over the siding to the discharge area has breached the line, effectively ending local plans to re-introduce the freight service.
Sheffield: A dark cold evening waiting for my train, always cold at Sheffield station not a pleasant place to hang about! The 195 unit I caught could be best described as a fridge and would put many a NB 47 on steam heat stock to shame. Progress, not.
Greenwich [DLR]: View from rear of DLR unit from Bank to Lewisham just departed from Greenwich, looking back towards the station where unit 149 from Lewisham to Bank is calling, before heading away down into the tunnel beneath the National Rail station and on under the Thames to Mudchute on the north side, at 09.42 on Saturday, 4th January 2025.
Handforth: Handforth briefly became well known when the Zoom call 'debates' at the then Parish Council made national and international news. The station is a an interesting spot, between Cheadle Hulme and Wilmslow. The 'Friends' group keep everything in good order and there are three distinctive old signs displayed on the platforms, including this LMR Maroon example that presumably once stood at the station entrance. 323202, a former West Midlands unit, calls at Handforth on a Piccadilly to Crewe service on 6th January 2025.
Maryhill Central: The site of Maryhill Central photographed in the early part of 1979. Demolition on the grand scale has been carried out ( I understand that a shopping centre was constructed at a later date ) and a shot from a similar viewpoint when still in use is at image 10336
Cliburn: The signal box at Cliburn, halfway between Appleby and Penrith on the Eden Valley Railway, closed with the line in 1962. The box controlled the level crossing and access to the adjacent goods yard but has been renovated in recent years and now forms part of Cliburn Station Holiday Accommodation. The old station building has been redeveloped into a private residence, see image [[91848]], but there is also a small static caravan park on the site, just to the right of the picture.
Pittenzie Halt: A view looking east at Pittenzie level crossing in 1995. I was standing on the former line to Perth with the Gleneagles line, and halt, just off to the right. The level crossing keeper's house still stood - and still stands today. This side of the road has been redeveloped as part of the new school.
Aviemore Shed: No.60 (Hunslet 3686 of 1948) passes Spey Lodge, with a train from Boat of Garten, in 1985. Spey Lodge was a hostel built by the LMS for crew lodgings. Now serves the same purpose for Strathspey Railway volunteers.
