Highgate: New footbridge under construction across Stanhope Road at Highgate on Friday, 7th February 2025. This will link two halves of what is now the Parkland Walk footpath (after the original bridge was deemed unsafe) but used to be the ex-GNR Northern Heights branch from Finsbury Park to Alexandra Palace that almost became part of the London Underground Northern Line but closed instead in 1954. A pity this bridge does not signify the reopening of the line which has been suggested many times. (See image [[90580]] from August 2024, for further details of this.)

Bewdley: 43122 leads 43094 on the HST working from Kiddy to Bridgnorth on the Winter Diesel Day. The facility to charge my phone on the GWR Castle Class later that day was a novel experience on a preserved line.

Shadwell: The entrance to the DLR station at Shadwell is built into one of the arches of the historic 1840 London & Blackwall Railway viaduct, with steps and a lift up to the island platform, seen at 09.16 on Saturday, 4th January 2025. It opened on 31st August 1987 with the first two stages of the system from Island Gardens to Stratford and Tower Gateway. A station on the Blackwall line, slightly to the east, called Shadwell & St. George's East, closed as a WWII economy in 1941 but never re-opened. Its derelict entrance survives on the south side of the viaduct just to the east of the DLR station. (See my photo, image no. 73355.)

Musgrave: This innocent looking bridge, 100 yards east of Musgrave between Kirkby Stephen and Appleby attracted national interest when, in July 2021, National Highways filled the arch with concrete claiming it was 'unstable'. This 'cultural vandalism' was followed by protests from enthusiasts and it transpired planning permission had been refused. Eden Council ordered the infill to be removed and in Autumn 2023 the bridge reopened, concreteless. The saga cost nearly £500,000 but ensured the Stainmore Railway Company at Kirkby Stephen and Eden Valley Railway Trust at Warcop may one day be able to join up.

Highlandman: In the trees in the lower half of the photograph a broadside view of the former station at Highlandman on the Gleneagles-Crieff line can be seen (its curved approach from the left has been ploughed out). Off to the left the curving boundary between the fields is the former Crieff-Perth line.

Barnetby: 66028, 6C75 1055 Immingham Bulk - Scunthorpe coal passing Barnetby in winter sunshine on 29th January 2025. This is one of the few coal services that still run. The coal is for the Steel Works at Scunthorpe. The old signalbox still stands, but boarded up, and signalling has been controlled by York for a number of years now.
