This signal box broke the section between Fushiebridge [1st] station and Tynehead station. The box was located on the Borthwick Bank, on the south side of the line, north east of Borthwick Castle .
This was the site of an ash (and other materials) dump from St Margarets Shed, there being two sets of sidings on the north side of the line accessed from a headshunt which made a trailing connection to the southbound line east of the signal box. The sidings allowed dumping of material into Brirky Side / Maggie Bowie's Glen. (See Birky Side Dump.)
The crossover here (just to the immediate west of the box) was used to let local trains from Edinburgh to Gorebridge change tracks for the return journey.
The signal box closed in 1968 (before the line closed in 1969). Following thus local trains (DMUs)had to continue to Heriot to change tracks.
After line closure this was the site of a track recovery depot, new sidings being laid for that purpose.
The base of the demolished signal box survived between closure and the works for re-opening of the line.
