Burnfoothill (1872-1951)

Description

This Ayrshire hill village was owned by the Dalmellington Iron Company. It consisted of three rows of cottages known collectively as Ponessan Row. The rows were on the east side of the company's railway from Drumgrange Engine to the Bowhill ironstone pits. A short distance (250 yards) to the south east of Burnfoothill was the much larger Lethanhill village.

The rows remained in place long after the ironstone pits had ceased (1921) and the mineral railway and incline closed (1937). Replacement housing was built by the council at Patna and the occupants relocated in the early 1950s.

Low walls and a generally flat area remained as a reminder until the area was opencast in the 2000s. Three large settling ponds are to the west of its site.
