Burnton Loop

Location type

Junction

Name and dates

Burnton Loop (1927-)

Opened on the Dalmellington Iron Company (Phase 3).

Description

This loop replaced the Laight Mine Loop. This had been the loading point for the Laight Mine and was retained as a passing loop after closure of the mine.

The loop was located at the point where the older line, via the Laight, was met by its replacement which came via cutler. The older route had a very steep ascent from the ironworks to the Laight and the newer route was on a easier gradient.

Operationally, the loop split the single track line between Pennyvenie Nos 2,3,7 Collieries and Dunaskin Central Washer and was immediately west of Minnivey Nos 4,5 and the Burnton Washer.

Today this is the approximate location of the Chalmerston Loading Pad.
