This is a two platform station on the East Coast Main Line. It is largely complete. The main station building, two storeys in stone, is on the northbound platform with a stone and timber waiting room on the southbound. To the south is a level crossing and a signal box at the south end of the northbound platform. Chathill is a small village on the west side of the station.
A large goods shed was on the east side, originally approached from the south over the level crossing. This goods line was later looped at the north end (around 1897). There were further goods sidings, serving coal drops, on the west side, approached from the north.
In 1898 the North Sunderland Light Railway opened from the north end of the goods loop to Seahouses on the east coast. An additional platform face was provided on the east side of the southbound platform.
The branch closed in 1951 and little remains of the goods loop and branch other than an overgrown trackbed.
