Name and dates

Cronberry Moor Mine (1920-1957)

Description

This colliery was developed by Bairds and Dalmellington Limited in 1920. The colliery had its own washery. Spoil was dumped to both the north and south sides. It was developed at a remote location on the edge of Airds Moss and a rudimentary passenger service, using old coaches, was provided on the mineral line which served the mine.

A mineral railway line was built from the near the end of the Lugar Iron Works to Cronberry Pit No 1 mineral line, running north east to serve Cronberry Moor Mine. There was a hutchway on the surface at the mine.

This line was augmented, after 1948, by a National Coal Board line which also served the short lived and unsuccessful [Mortonmuir 8,9 Colliery]], and which probably closed not long after 1953.

Cronberry Moor Mine closed in 1957.
