This colliery was developed by the National Coal Board upon its creation. Spoil from the mine was dumped by the Bellow Water to the south and the screens were connected to railway sidings to the north west.
To serve it, a new line was opened from Cronberry No 4 Pit Signal Box along a similar, but less tightly curved, course to the older Cronberry Tileworks branch and continuing north east past the former site of Mortonmuir Pit to Mortonmuir 8,9 Colliery. There were exchange sidings on the line to the south west of the colliery and looped sidings below the colliery's bunker. This line continued a short way to meet the older Lugar Ironworks Railway line to Cronberry Moor Mine, giving it a main line exit in addition to the line to the former Lugar Iron Works.
Unfortunately Mortonmuir 8,9 Colliery was unsuccessful and was abandoned in 1953, along with the line between Cronberry No 4 Pit Signal Box and the connection to the Cronberry Moor Mine line.
