The railway is double track from Dalrymple Junction north to Ayr. Both the lines to Girvan and Waterside are single track. The single track lines meet and the line doubles to the north of the junction.
Both lines were originally single track, with both lines doubling before meeting at the junction. The very short lived Maybole Junction [Station] was located in the 'V' of the junction.
The signal box opened in 1879 on the east side of the line. The Girvan route was doubled in 1894, the Dalmellington line still doubling before the junction. Probably the box was replaced at this date.
The two lines to the south were singled in 1973 and the signal box closed, control passed to Belmont Level Crossing signal box.
