Description

This dye works was on the east bank of the River Leven by Bonhill.

It opened as a bleach field before becoming a dye works and being expanded in the 1860s. It became part of the United Turkey Red Co. in 1897.

The site was rail served with a single track line opened in 1875 approaching the works from the north via a bridge over the Leven (prior to that coal was carted from Dalmonach Print Works. The branch started from just south of Alexandria station via a reversing spur from the goods yard. The works predated the railway considerably.

The line finished with a pair of loops and tightly curve sidings serving the works, to the west. One central siding was connected by turnplate.

A large mill lade, largely overgrown today, ran down the west side parallel to the river.

After closure in 1936 the works had a variety of uses. Some buildings survive and it is presently a bonded warehouse. The branch closed around 1957.

The Black Bridge over the Leven has been demolished, around 2012.
