Name and dates

Dochart Viaduct (1886-1965)

Opened on the Killin Railway.

Description

This disused single track five arch concrete viaduct crosses the River Dochart in Killin, just south of the former Killin [2nd].

It is a skew viaduct with five mass concrete arches, topped with castellation. The engineer was John Strain and contractor A & K Macdonald (of Skye). Use of mass concrete for viaducts was not new, it had been used earlier for the Oban extension, notably for Falls of Cruachan Viaduct. However the contractor for this viaduct was inexperienced in working with concrete leading to his bankruptcy and replacement in 1884. The new contractor was John Best, the viaduct completed in 1885.

The viaduct now carries a footpath and has been fitted with fencing.

The Falls of Dochart are nearby to the south west.
