Name and dates

Dollar Viaduct (1871-1964)

Opened on the Devon Valley Railway.

Description

This was a six span single track girder viaduct crossing the River Devon south east of Dollar carrying the Devon Valley Railway east to Kinross. The viaduct, on a gentle curve, was 390ft long and 53ft high with spans between 45ft and 55ft long. The viaduct approaching the viaduct from the station became increasingly tall before the line crossed over the Devon to high ground on the south side of the river. The northern two piers were at right angles to the railway, the third being triangular where the girders became skew to the line, the subsequent piers being aligned with the river.

The two northern spans crossed over the original alignment of the River Devon. The river was diverted into a new channel running east from the viaduct to take it safely away from the long embankment and north end of the viaduct. The embankment is 900yds long and 40ft high.

Today the piers and approach embankment remain.

Three other diversions of the River Devon were made further west, near the Tillicoultry Cemetery, by Harvieston Castle West Lodge and by the East Lodge.
