Dumbarton Gas Works

Description

This gas works was opened by the Dumbarton Town Council Gas Department in 1923. The works was initially on the north side of the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway and expanded in 1954 to include a further gasometer on the west/south side of the line. It was absorbed by the Scottish Gas Board in 1949.

The works had its own locomotives. Rail access was from the east and there was a set of exchange sidings alongside the north side of the railway.

Rail access ceased about 1972 with one locomotive going to be used by Metal Industries (Salvage) Ltd at Faslane Military Port and another going, in 1973, to the Dumbarton Saw Mill.
