This colliery was at the end of the 'main line' of the Plean Colliery Branch (Scottish Central Railway). The mine was equipped with coke ovens and a retort. It was also known as Plean East Pit, No 3 or Plean Colliery.
Just north east of the colliery was Plean West Pit Junction. To the north was a curved line to Plean West Pit / Gartwhinnie Quarry and to the south another curved line reached Blackcraig Quarry (later the site of a bing).
A new shaft Plean Colliery No 4 opened to the north west in 1895. Plean Colliery No 5 (further east) opened in 1932.
The coke ovens closed in 1959.
Plean Colliery, the 3, 4 and 5 shafts, closed in 1962.
