This colliery was equipped with coke ovens. There were three shafts, nos 3 (the oldest East Plean Colliery), 4 & 5 (Plean Colliery No 5). It was served by the Plean Colliery Branch (Scottish Central Railway), located on the south side of that mineral line and reached by reversal from Plean Quarry Junction.
No 4 was opened by the Plean Colliery Company north east of East Plean Colliery nearby the site of which there was a bing. A further bing was located east of Plean Colliery.
Plean Colliery No 5 opened to the east and was connected to No 4 by a tramway. Coal had been worked here from no 4, but the haulage road had become very extended.
Latterly no 4 was used for ventillation and pumping.
Plean Colliery closed in 1962 and was formally abandoned the following year (leading to the closure of the branch the year after that).
Also known as Plean East Colliery (no 4 it was built just west of the settlement of East Plean which itself was later known as Plean).
The site of the colliery and grounds of Plean House are now Stirling Council - Plean Country Park .
