Hamiltonhill Slip (1875-1903)

Description

On the east side of the Forth and Clyde Canal between Firhill Basin (to the north) and Hamiltonhill Basin was the shipyard of Burrell & Sons. This was located in a basin originally built around 1875 for a Strone Colliery Co pit and afterwards the north side of the basin had a puddle clay pit - the clay used for canal leaks. At this yard work began in 1875 building puffers for their, and others, use. There was a small long basin on the east side of the canal with the shipyard, and its slip, on the south side. The yard closed in 1903 by which time 50 vessels had been built.
