Name and dates

Hillhouseridge Oil Works (1865-1871)

Description

Also known as Simpson's Oil Works. The sidings were 5 chains (0.1 km) from the siding for Graystonelee Colliery, which places the works just to the south of the turn out for that colliery in the environs of 'Bridge End'. The 1898 OS map shows an area of spoil on the south side of the line.

Another possible site is further west (just east of Hartwoodhill Colliery Pit Nos 1 and 2), but this site is 45 chains from Graystonelee (0.9 km). The stub of turnout is shown here, an old shaft on the north side of the line and spoil heaps on the south side.

The works had closed in 1871 so very little probably remained in place by 1898. Older tramway lines had been replaced with newer railways and it is possible this further removed any remains.
