Shotts Loops (1859-1963)

Opened on the Shotts Branch (Monkland Railways).

Description

The 1859 mineral branch from Blackhall Junction met the 1860 mineral branch from Westcraigs Junction in Shotts close to the Shotts Iron Works. A series of loop on the mineral lines served the works. (The loops were altered when the line to the north opened.)

The Shotts Iron Co's works railway was served from the loops, accessed from the north. Once onto the iron works line the works were accessed by reversal, the furnace tops being reached by a level crossing over the line from Blackhall Junction and furnace bottoms reached by a line passing below the Blackhall Junction line. (When first opened a line served the furnace tops with a connection accessed from the south.)

Shotts East Signal Box opened here in 1900. It was to the east of the loops where the flat level crossing was located.

A goods yard and goods shed were added on the north side of the loops, accessed from the north west.

The National Coal Board opened workshops at the former iron works in 1948. The line south to Blackhall Junction closed in 1950. The remaining line from the north, signal box and loops closed in 1963. (The workshops closed around 1970.)

The site of the loops is now part of an industrial estate between the B717 and Stable Road.
