This signal box controlled the Caledonian Railway's access to the Shotts Iron Co's works railway from the Cleland and Midcalder Line (Caledonian Railway). The works opened in 1801.
Althought the iron works line led off south west from the east-west main line the junction was configured to allow approach from borth directions. Opposite the box (on the north side of the line) was a very short loop, the iron works line joining the west end of the loop. Sidings also led off to the west, in the 'V' of the junction. Further sidings led off the east end of the loop.
The connection was made just north of one of the works' tips.
The works closed in 1947, however workshops at the site cotinued in operation.
The box closed in 1965 and the works line closed. The last parts of the works closed around 1970.
The main line remains open and was electrified in 2019.
