Description
Hurlford signal box was to the south of Hurlford station. It was on the west side of the junction between the G&SWR main line from Glasgow to Carlisle and the Galston branch. The box still stands, although unused.
It opened as Hurlford South signal box. To the north it controllednot only the junction but also the bay platform and the south goods yard on the east side of Hutlford station. (Hurlford had a goods yard on the west side at the north end too.) To the south it controlled the branch, Hurlford Mineral Sidings approach, Hurlford Shed and the main line.
The box was replaced. The new box was renamed Hurlford No 2 box.
With the closure of the no 1 box in 1934 it was renamed simply 'Hurlford'.
The branch closed in 1965, the Hurlford Mineral Sidings in 1966 and Hurlford Shed in 1967.
The sidings were replaced with Hurlford Sidings.
The sidings are now out of use and the box has seen little use in recent years.
Jimmy Knapp, who became General Secretary of the National Union of Railwaymen, began his railway career in this box in 1955.
