Inveramsay (1857-1951)

Opened on the Great North of Scotland Railway.
Opened on the Banff, Macduff and Turriff Junction Railway.

Description

This was the junction station for the Banff, Macduff and Turriff Junction Railway. It opened with the branch. Although it also served the local area, with a low population and largely farmland, its chief purpose was as an interchange station. The station opened with the opening of the branch and closed with its closing to passengers.

There were two platforms on the main line and a single platform, with loop, on the branch. There were sidings and a turntable on the east side of the line.

Kintore [1st] to Inveramsay was doubled in 1882. A north and south box opened in 1882.

The south box controlled the junction south of the station, the box being on the west side of the line. It also controlled the approach to the engine shed and sidings to the south of the station.

The north box was for the branch, controlling the north end of the branch platform's loop and access to a loading bank.

From Inveramsay to Insch was doubled in 1888.

The north signal box closed in 1930 and a ground frame was installed.

The station closed to passengers in 1951 with the closure of the branch to passengers.

The line was singled in 1969 between Inverurie and Insch.

The platforms remain although the now single track main line has been slewed to half way between the platforms. A single station build remains on the 'island' platform shared between the Aberdeen bound trains and the branch.
