This location is not a true junction, but rather the site of a double track line becoming single on its way south. The north end of the loop is at Newcraighall South Junction (also not a true junction).
The location is sandwiched between the alignment of the original Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway and the replacement route on the Edinburgh and Hawick Railway (North British Railway). Sherifhall [1st] station was just to the west and Sherifhall [2nd] very close by.
The alignment of the original line can be found passing through a redundant bridge under the roadway. The trackbed of the later line can be seen curving gently off to the north west to Millerhill.
