This small locomotive shed opened with the Kirriemuir branch in 1854/55. It was at the east end of the station, accessible from the run round loop by the passenger platform and loading bank to its south. When first opened there was no turntable.
A turntable was added in 1899 and the shed siding extended through the east end of the building to reach it.
The shed closed around 1900, perhaps due to the proximity of the new Forfar Shed [2nd]. The site had been cleared by The Grouping.
The branch closed to passengers in 1952 and completely in 1965.
The site of the shed was in the trees to the west of the housing now occupying the station site.
