Name and dates

Lilliehill Lower Junction (1858-1963)

Opened on the West of Fife Mineral Railway.

Description

This was a four way junction north of Dunfermline and Townhill. The lines meeting here were goods and minerals only and single track.

To the north west was the 1858 line to Steelend Goods and to the north east the 1858 line to Kingseat Colliery (which continued to Kelty North Junction). This northern division of lines was the original Lilliehill Junction. (Also known as Lilliehill Upper Junction.)

To the south west was the 1858 line from Whitemyre Junction met by the 1880 line from Townhill Junction to the south east. (Also known as Lilliehill Lower Junction.)

There was a length of about 14 chains between the northern and southern junctions. Between these was a single track.

In addition the junction gave access to Townhill Power Station, in the 'V' of the junction to the south, Townhill Colliery No 7 on the east side of the junction (access from the south) and Lilliehill Fire-clay Works in the 'V' of the junction to the north.

The signal box here opened in 1895 and closed in 1925.

The line north east to Kelty closed in the 1950s.

The line south west to Whitemyre Junction closed in 1963.

The line north west, formerly to Steelend Goods and latterly to RNSD Lathalmond, closed in 1971.

The last line was that to Townhill Junction which closed in 1976. The final use was for access to Townhill Power Station, accessed by reversal.

The north and south junction sites remain today, a footpath and overgrown.
