The Torran Rocks are a largely submerged series of reefs, a hazard to shipping, formed by a cluster of rocks, some surface breaking, to the south of Iona and south west of the Ross of Mull. The rocks reach out about five miles from the coast (the Stevensons' lighthouse Dubh Artach Lighthouse is even further out at about fifteen miles from Iona).
Although the translation of Torrann/Torrainn as loud murmur, rumble or thunder is often used, the plural of Torran, little hill, seems more likely for a series of small rocks (especially with several of the rocks having torr (tòrr) or torran in their names. 'Na' suggests plural. Thus torrain, little hills. Or perhaps it was a double meaning. Indeed 'tòrr' also means a 'a lot'.
