Newark Crossing (1852-)

Opened on the Peterborough to Doncaster Line (Great Northern Railway).
Opened on the Nottingham to Lincoln Branch (Midland Railway).

Description

This is a level crossing where one double track railway crosses another. It is the last remaining example of its kind in Britain, sometimes known as a 'flat crossing'. It is also known as Trent Level Crossing.

The Nottingham to Lincoln Branch (Midland Railway) was crossed by the Peterborough to Doncaster Line (Great Northern Railway), the East Coast Main Line, on the level in 1852.

The ECML is electrified making this a crossing between an electrified and non electrified line.

To the south are Newark Castle, on the Nottingham line, and Newark North Gate on the ECML.
