This is a two platform station with a listed main station building. The station opened 6 years before the nearby Newark North Gate on the East Coast Main Line.
To the south of the station is a level crossing and signal box.
To the north the line crosses the East Coast Main Line on the level at Newark Crossing, the last example of its kind in Britain. There is a link to the East Coast Main Line from Newark Crossing East Junction which was built by British Railways in 1965. This allows a train from Newark North Gate to join the line eastbound.
Historically there was a link between the lines north of the station, allowing a train from Newark Castle to join the East Coast Main Line.
