A large station on the East Coast Main Line of three platforms. Also known as Newark Northgate. Opened 1852, 6 years after the nearby Newark Castle opened in 1846.
To the north of the station the main line crosses the Nottingham to Lincoln Branch (Midland Railway) on the level, the last example of its kind in Britain. A curve from Newark Crossing South Junction, built by British Railways in 1965, allows a train from North Gate to join that line eastbound.
Historically there was a link between the lines north of the station, allowing a train from Newark Castle to join the East Coast Main Line.
