This junction is directly east of Newcastle Central station. It is the junction between the old main line to the south and the main line north to Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh Waverley. The keep of Newcastle Castle is located in the 'V' of the junction.
Both lines meeting here were opened by the Newcastle and Berwick Railway, the line from the south approaching from Gateshead over the High Level Bridge.
The junction is famous for the sheer number of lines which crossed here, today it is much simplified.
The junction is overlooked by the keep of Newcastle Castle .
