Name and dates

Newsham Junction

Opened on the Blyth Extension (Seghill Railway).

Description

This junction was immediately south of Newsham station. It opened in 1850 when the 1846 Blyth Extension (Seghill Railway) was met by the Bedlington Private Railway (Bedlington Coal Company).

An additional line to Blyth opened in 1888, forming a loop from a junction at the north end of Newsham's Blyth branch platform.

Both the lines to Bedlington and Blyth [2nd] closed in 1964. The Blyth route closed in 1968, although it remained open as far as Isabella Pit Junction as an approach to Bates Staithes until recent years.

The location is not longer a junction. A signal box remains open at Newsham South Level Crossing about 2/3 mile south.
