Locomotives for the Edinburgh and Northern Railway were imported through this harbour for the line's opening. Eight locomotives and tenders were landed at the pier from the Forth Bank Works [Hawthorns] in Newcastle.
The main line opened in 1847 but harbour line, curiously, opened in 1849. The branch also served the Pettycur Salt Works (and its coke ovens) and, from 1902, the Pettycur Glass Works on the same site. The reversing spur for the coke ovens ended at the base of the harbour pier.
