Polmaise Junction

Location type

Junction

Name and dates

Polmaise Junction (1904-1997)

Opened on the Scottish Central Railway.
Opened on the Polmaise Colliery Branch.

Description

This junction was south of Stirling. The mineral line to Polmaise Nos 1 and 2 Colliery and Polmaise Nos 3 and 4 Colliery ran east from here, access to the branch being from the south.

There were sidings on both side of the main line. The permanent signal box opened here in 1905 on the west side of the line opposite the junction. (A temporary box opened here during construction in 1904.)

A rail tip was to be developed in the 'V' of the junction.

Later the sidings on the east side were to be a sand depot.

The branch closed with Polmaise Nos 3 and 4 Colliery in 1987. The line remained in place until 1989.

The box survived a little longer, ceasing to be used in 1992 and formally closing in 1997. It was demolished in 2000.
