Junction

Name and dates

Redford Junction (1913-)

Station code: National Rail
Opened on the Dunfermline Branch (Edinburgh and Northern Railway).
Opened on the Thornton Marshalling Yard and Rothes Pit (British Railways).

Description

Redford Siding existed prior to 1913. In 1913 the Lochore and Redford Extension (North British Railway) extended the Kinglassie Colliery line to Redford (to create a loop from Kelty). This crossed the Redford Siding which was connected to the new line instead of continuing to make its own collection. Redford Junction was to the east of the original connection.

The junction was modified for the Thornton Marshalling Yard and Glenrothes Pit (British Railways). This was a double track junction. The junction became the eastern entry for the yard. In addition a double track railway was laid to the immediate north of the existing line from here to Thornton West Junction. To the east there was a second access to the Glenrothes Pit from this line, in addition to the main connection directly from Thornton Marshalling Yard. The signal box (1956) was on the south side of the line opposite Redford Junction.

The box closed in 1981, taken over by the Edinburgh Signalling Centre. The junction became a single lead junction. The additional lines east to Thornton West Junction were lifted. Further to the east although the main connection to Glenrothes Pit had gone by this date the second connection was maintained. It has since been taken out.
