Name and dates

Thornton Yard Tower (1956-1975)

Opened on the Thornton Marshalling Yard and Rothes Pit (British Railways).

Description

This was the control tower for the west end of Thornton Yard controlling the reception sidings, hump, retarders and access to the sorting sidings. (See main Thornton Yard entry.)

The tower was at the west end of the sorting sidings, north of the hump, with a hump avoiding line running round its north side.

The tower was abandoned in 1975 after which the hump was disused and the western end of the northern group of sorting sidings lifted.

The building still stands, boarded up and out of use.
