Name and dates

Kinglassie Colliery (1911-1968)

Open on the Fife Coal Co Ltd.

Description

Sunk by the Fife Coal Co Ltd. Opened in 1911. The railway to the west was extended to the site Westfield to Kinglassie Line (North British Railway). It was later, in 1919, extended to Redford Junction to create a long loop line from Kelty to Redford.

A signal box was prepared on the south side of a loop here at its west end in 1957. To the north were the colliery sidings, connected to the west end of the loop and approached from either the west or east via reversing spurs at either end of the colliery lines. The signal box, as well as controlling traffic locally, was perhaps a fringe box for Thornton Yard (opened progressively between 1956 and 1958).

It seems that the signal box was never, or infrequently, used and was moved to become Annat Signal Box on the Mallaig Extension (West Highland Railway) in 1964, where the Scottish Pulp and Paper Mills was under development.
