Thornton Yard Signal Box

Location type

Name and dates

Thornton Yard Signal Box (1956-1991)

Opened on the Thornton Marshalling Yard and Rothes Pit (British Railways).

Description

This yard controlled the eastern end of Thornton Yard. (See main Thornton Yard entry.)

The box controlled departures from the east end of the sorting sidings, the Westfield Opencast branch, entry to the Rothes Pit exchange yard, and, later, Thornton Junction TMD. The box was on the north side of the line.

After the Edinburgh Signalling Centre took over most signalling in the area in 1980 the box provided some semaphore signals in an area of coloured light signalling.

It closed around 1991, replaced by yard operation. Since then the yard has been repeatedly cut back and now has only six sidings, partly overgrown.
