This fort was located on Antonine's Wall. There was an annex (extension) to the east. The fort may have been built on the site of an earlier Agricola period fort.
To the north is the Scottish Central Railway and to the south, and much closer, the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway. Some finds were made in the construction of the latter.
Rough Castle was the site of the Falkirk Tryst, the cattle market in droving times. After the opening of the Forth and Clyde Canal it relocated to Stenhousemuir. (Stenhousemuir Siding was opened there later.)
