This was a relatively short lived station on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway which was an exchange point between that line and the Scottish Central Railway also serving the local, somewhat underpopulated, area. It must have been useful for railway employees however.
There were exchange sidings here on either side of the line. On the north side were sidings approached from the Scottish Central, in effect the furthest south west part of that line. On the south side were sidings approached from the west and a loop. These sidings have survived, in use as permanent way sidings.
Just to the north is Greenhill Lower Junction where the line from Cumbernauld and the south meets the Scottish Central on its way north to Stirling and Perth.
