This is an impressive disused double track fifteen arch masonry viaduct to the north of the former Shankend station. The viaduct is 597 ft long and 60 ft high.
This is an exposed moorland location and the viaduct is very much a local landmark.
The viaduct does not cross a major watercourse but the depression of the Langside Burn.
The viaduct is still railway property and is maintained, most recently by Railtrack around 2008. Repairs to the stonework have been made using brick on many occasions.
The ends of the viaduct are fenced off.
Engineer: Charles Jopp.
